Will Facebook Credits Mean More Cash for Indie Developers?

Media_httpphotoscakfb_ehaka

Facebook is ramping up support and features in its Facebook Credits program, a virtual currency system that is intended to work right across Facebook.

This means that users will be able to buy "Facebook Credits" and then use them on any application. In theory, this should make it easier for indie devs to capture a share of users' wallets. The very same credits the user buys to spend in Farmville or Mafia Wars can also be spent in your game.

But will this work in practice? Time will tell. The only encouraging hint we have from Facebook so far is:

Today more than 500,000 applications exist on Facebook, and the virtual goods within those applications (particularly games) have become an increasingly valuable part of the user experience. By providing a single, cross-application currency, our goal is to making transactions simpler for users, leading to a higher conversion rate for developers. Specifically, our early testing has shown that users paying with Facebook Credits are significantly more likely to complete a purchase than the average Facebook user.

The other "money quote":

To accomplish these goals, Facebook will collect 30 percent of currency spent by users.

Seems a bit on the steep side. Or is that just me?
